What is the difference between TIBC and transferrin?
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) and transferrin are related but distinct concepts. TIBC measures the total amount of iron that can be bound by transferrin and other proteins in the blood. It represents the maximum capacity for iron binding. Transferrin, on the other hand, is a specific protein responsible for binding and transporting iron throughout the body. In blood tests, transferrin levels are often indirectly estimated by measuring TIBC. While TIBC reflects the overall iron-binding capacity, transferrin concentration directly measures the amount of transferrin present. Both TIBC and transferrin tests are valuable in assessing iron status and related disorders.
