    WRN gene

    A gene that makes a protein involved in unwinding DNA and repairing damaged DNA. Mutations (changes) in the gene may keep cells from repairing their DNA, which may cause abnormal cells, including cancer cells, to grow. gene mutations have been found in many types of cancer and in an inherited condition called Werner syndrome, which increases the risk of certain types of cancer.
