Formula For Time Of Death

  • The time period in hours from death to when a body is found can be estimated from the body and ambient temperature based on an equation by Glaister.

Time since death = (98.6 °F - Body temperature in °F) / T

 

Where

  1. Time since death is given in hours;
  2. Body temperature is given in Fahrenheit (F); and
  3. T is a factor that depends on the ambient temperature:
    • When ambient temperature < 32°F (0°C), T = 1.5; and
    • When ambient temperature ≥ 32°F (0°C), T = 0.75.

 

Why does the T factor change?

  • A body begins to cool from the moment of death - the speed of this process is relatively quicker if the surrounding temperature is low enough to freeze water.

What is Time Of Death

  • The Time of Death calculation is used to estimate the amount of time since the Time of Death for a body based on the temperature
  • If you know temperature values in degrees then the result of time since death will be in hours.
  • If the body temperature is equal to or less than the ambient temperature, the time since death is unknown.
  • This is the simple equation where the body temperature and the ambient temperature are used to calculate the number of hours a body has been dead.   
  • This equation uses 1.5 degrees per hour cooling factor for cold days (slightly above freezing and colder) and 0.75 degrees for typical results above freezing.

 

Forensically, the time of death can be described in three ways:

  • Physiological time of death – when the body ceased to function;
  • Estimated time of death – an estimate based on the available information (i.e. body and ambient temperature);
  • Legal time of death – the time at which body is found or the person is declared dead.

 

Determine The Time of Death Using Rigor Mortis

  • Another method of estimating the time of death is linked to the installation of rigor mortis,
  • This is the natural process that starts to install roughly 2 hours after death and first occurs in the smaller muscles such as those in the face and neck and then covers the entire muscles of the body, as they become larger. 
  • Rigor mortis method works in the first 36 to 48 hours.
  • It is also known as the post-death stiffness method.
  • Rigor mortis is based on the fact that the corpse becomes rigid a few hours after death, and then becomes flexible again after a given period of time.
