Blood Volume (BV) calculator enables one to find
the total volume of blood in an individual's body.
A condition wherein there is a severe low blood
volume is medically known as hypovolemia. Likewise, a condition where there is
high blood volume, it is called hypervolemia. Both can prove fatal and can lead
to adverse health conditions. So, it becomes all the more important to
calculate the level of blood volume a body has.
The blood volume calculation is needed by
doctors to diagnose a patient correctly and providing the correct treatment for
any conditions including but not limited to kidney failure, hypertension, and
congestive heart failure.
This estimate is arrived on the basis of the
individual's gender, height, and weight. The blood volume in males is usually
higher than that in females. An average adult male has around 5.5 liters of
blood, while an average female has only around 3.5 liters of blood.
Preoperative assessment of estimated BV is
essential for patients undergoing surgery. It impacts perfusion care, including
hemodynamic and pharmacologic interventions and transfusion practices.
