What is the difference between LFT and CMP?

LFT (Liver Function Test) and CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) are both blood tests that provide information about different aspects of a person's health. LFT primarily focuses on assessing liver function and includes tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, and sometimes additional markers like gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) or prothrombin time. On the other hand, a CMP is a more comprehensive panel that includes liver function tests as well as other components related to metabolic and organ function. In addition to liver enzymes, a CMP measures electrolytes, kidney function markers (such as creatinine), glucose levels, and protein levels. CMP provides a broader evaluation of overall health, while LFT specifically targets liver function. The choice of which test to order depends on the healthcare provider's clinical judgment, the patient's specific condition, and the desired information required.
